Sustainable Beauty is an inspirational and practical guide to living a more eco-conscious lifestyle and maintaining a low-waste beauty routine.
Vegan, cruelty-free, ‘clean’, organic, non-GM, zero-waste, not to mention palm oil, silicones and micro-plastics – where do you start when it comes to creating a sustainable beauty routine? There are thousands of products claiming to be better for the environment and your skin, but they also come with a hefty price tag.
So what can we actually do to make a difference? This book provides the small steps everyone can take to make a big difference at home.
Justine Jenkins, an holistic and sustainable make-up artist & consultant, guides you through – breaking down the issues and explaining how we can mitigate them at home.
With easy tutorials to follow – from simplifying your beauty routine and product label literacy through to recipes for DIY hydrating serums and superfood face masks – Jenkins shows you how small changes in habit can result in a more sustainable beauty routine that doesn’t break the bank.
Did you know that…

More than 120 billion units of packaging are produced in the global cosmetics industry annually. If refillable containers were used for cosmetics, as much as 70% of carbon emissions associated with the beauty industry could be eliminated. An estimated 70% of beauty products contain a palm oil derivative, the production of which is believed to be responsible for 8% of the world’s deforestation between 1990 and 2008.
With this book you can…Take your first steps in creating an eco-smart dresser: learn how to read a label, and find out what natural ingredients you’ll need to make your own recipes such as making your own deodorant and body butter. Make essential, nature-based cosmetics: minimize your make-up drawer and master both the application and creation of your new go-to beauty products, from multipurpose lip balms to the perfect eyeliner flick.  Simplify your skincare and body routines: from cleansing and toning to rejuvenating and conditioning, discover your body’s needs from head to toe and the secret to beautiful skin, body, hands and nails. Get luxurious hair with low-waste practices: from hair masks to healing rinses, remedying, maintaining and styling shiny, healthy hair has never been easier with Jenkins’ savvy recipes, hacks and tutorials.
Other titles in the Sustainable Living series include: Sustainable Home, Sustainable Travel, Sustainable Garden.

Defining sustainable beauty

Sustainable beauty means different things to different people, so it really boils down to what is important to you. Issues you may want to consider are: human and animal welfare, the number of miles ingredients and products have travelled, damage to biodiversity and to the environment, carbon and water footprint, the quality of ingredients and how they are grown, renewable resources, aquatic damage, waste management and unsustainable packaging

As you can see, there is much to consider behind the glitz and glamour. Some of these issues will touch a nerve within you, whilst others won’t feel so important right now. It’s impossible to tick all those boxes, so start with one. Research the brands you use, and get informed. Brands that have true sustainability at their core, will be able to answer your questions. We won’t always make perfect choices, but we can strive to do what we can. This book will serve you as a sustainable beauty guide.

The ethical buyer

We can make so many positive changes that will move the beauty industry in a more sustainable direction. I’ve outlined 9 pillars below, to support you in making that change.

Spending power – as the consumer, the power is in your hands. Direct your spending to more sustainable brands, and the industry will get the message. Support the brands that care about animals, people and the planet.

Transparency – demand transparency from the brands you buy. Email them and tell them what is important and valuable to you. You have a right to know about their supply chain.

Action – email the brands that put profits over the planet. Ask questions, such as where their manufacturing ingredients are from or if they’re conflict-free, use non-GMO ingredients, use child labour, harm animals or contribute to deforestation. If they feel there is a big enough demand, they will change.

Reduce – the biggest impact you can have on sustainability, is to reduce what products you use and buy.

Recycle – get informed about what packaging can be recycled at home in your area, and what needs specialist recycling. If funds allow, invest in a TerraCycle box for hard to recycle items.

Reuse/Repurpose – even better than recycling, is reusing existing packaging

for other purposes.

Refill – choose brands that offer refillable options. Some supermarkets, as well as local shops, now offer this service for beauty products. Carbon conscious companies like Loop, offer refillable products delivered to your door.

Research – don’t take as verbatim what companies say on their packaging or website: question them. Brands that have an elevated moral compass will be only too willing to answer.

Create your own – a great way of consuming less. You will have to purchase the ingredients you don’t already have, but they’ll produce a lot more product for your buck.

A nourishing oat face mask Makes 1 mask

When you’re making a batch of my healing oat soak for sensitive skin (see page 76), try to keep some oat powder back for this recipe. Oats are an effective alternative to soaps and detergents, so are great for nourishing tired skin and wonderful in a face mask like this one. Oats contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.

Method

1. Place the ground oats in the bowl. Add the castor oil and mix until it becomes a paste.

2. Apply to your clean, dry face using your fingertips, avoiding your eyes and lips. Leave for 10 minutes.

3. Wipe off with a damp face cloth or rinse off with cold water. Pat dry.
